Jesus The ‘God-Man’

|

Jesus Christ our Saviour is truly God and truly human at the same time. What does that mean to you and me, as His followers.

A) Why Christ Jesus came to earth as revealed in the bible
Isaiah 9:6-8 New International Version

And he will be called   Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,   Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace   there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

In the verse above we see the two natures of God spelt out, that is; divine and human nature, this is a mystery but we do believe it because it is the word of God. These will help us to unpack the purpose why He came to the earth.

Fundamentally from scriptures we know that He came to seek and save His people.

The name Jesus in Hebrew is Yeshua which means Salvation. This was his main purpose for coming to the earth.

Matthew 1:20-21 New International Version
  • Save people in a wholistic sense; body soul and spirit (John 10:10b) The fountain of abundant life is in Jesus.
  • Full restoration as God intended in the beginning (Gen.2 before Gen 3-the fall). This is the whole concept of salvation.

Qn: Is your soul saved? Can you confidently say I am a Christian, born again?

When we trust Jesus personally and make Him our personal Lord and Saviour to deal with our own sins, then will we know the Joy of Salvation.

Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost- the soul of man

10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

What was lost?

  • We lost our fellowship with God from the fall of man in the garden of Eden
  • Our souls were lost because we sold out to the devil
  • We lost our relationship with God.

In Luke.19:10 Zacchaeus was a rich fellow and needed to see Jesus. When Jesus finally visited at his house he made a statement which implied the purpose for which He came. Man is now restored in Christ (Joel.2:25; 3:1-2)

To give his life a ransom for many.

In the Old Testament, the life giving blood of animals was required to be poured out for redemption. No sinner can die for their own sins and live, that is why it took Jesus to come and pay the price so that we may live. God declares us free from our sins, and takes away our guilt and we find joy in the Lord.

The Good News: He came to make us born again

To be born again is to be born of God. When you are born once you die twice, the physical death but also the spiritual death. When you are born twice, you die only once, the physical death, the spiritual death does not occur. The first birth gave us bodies, put us in clans, put us in families etc, but the second birth which is the spiritual birth puts us in the family of God both now and ever more. We must be born again first we believe then we are baptised into Christ.

  • Be BA how? Not by water baptism. Water baptism- external apart from faith-sequence see Mk.16:15ff

The above reasons address areas of Deity/divinity of Jesus Christ or His humanity

B) What qualities revealed Christ Jesus as truly human?
  1. He slept. In the boat (Matt.8:24)
  2. He ate food (Lk.24:41-43)
  3. He cried-real tears (John.11:35)
  4. He died (John.19:30,32-34)
  5. He was tempted in all areas of life as we are and yet with no sin. (Heb.4:14-16)
  6. He was rejected by his own people- could not do much at his own home area. He knew rejection and being deserted by beloved ones!! Friends.

And as truly human, Jesus Christ is qualified to represent us to a holy God. Ref. Heb.4:14-16

  • As, our Advocate (1John.2:1-2)
  • And our Intercessor (Rom.8:34)

But as truly human he cannot save us therefore we need a truly divine Saviour to save us. Therefore;

C) What qualities in Christ  reveal Him as truly God
  1. He forgave sins (Mark.2:1-10)
  2. Jesus lived a perfectly holy life John.8:46; 18:38; 19:4,6
  3. The Lamb without blemish
  4. Accepted to be worshipped John 9:36-38; God (John.20:27-28)
  5. Was also a Creator-co Creator with the Father (Col.1:16; John.1:1-3)
  6. Is called Immanuel i.e. God with us Matt.1:23; (in the OT God among His people in the wilderness, NT Immanuel, NT God in us (1Cor.6:19-20)
  7. Jesus overcame/defeated death  (1Cor.15:15-56)

As truly God, in human body, Jesus came to reveal God to us Gal.1:15ff, only God can bring God into human hearts. Jesus was fully man, fully human so that He could represent us before God.

You can invite God (Jesus-Son) to reveal God (Father) to you personally.
