2 Corinthians 3:18 Amplified Bible
18 And we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit.

1 Peter 2:9 New International Version 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Character is who we really are or become. It is what you are in the dark.

There are certain things that can define our character

  • Work
  • Money/Poverty (presence and absence of it) Prov.30
  • Sex/Relations (see Samson, David & Joseph)
  • Power (See Saul & David)

There are also those things that can refine our character. Hardship in a way forms the greater part of one’s character. Romans.5:4
See examples of

  • Joseph Gen.37 & 39,
  • Jacob Gen. 25:27
    Jacob could have ended up perhaps;

    • A lazy fellow
    • A deceiver

Jacob’s experience in Paddan Aram refined him into;

  1. A hardworking man 14years of work Gen.30:26;
  2. A good Husband Gen.29:15-20; 31:4-7
  3. A good brother Gen.32:20
  4. A good father and grandfather Gen.33:13;

Proverbs 13:22 NKJV 22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, But the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.

We are all work in progress and God keeps shaping us every step of the way.
progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit.
God puts a seal on our lives, the Holy Spirit, who is able to help us through the journey of life, these hardships don’t last because the Holy Spirit gives us strength, and perseverance through them.

Through them He builds our character. When Moses fled Egypt God was preparing his character for the Exodus experience, Just as Joseph was prepared for the Egypt experience.

Deuteronomy 8:2 NLT Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands.

Hebrews 1:3 NLT  The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.

The economic times today can be likened to the times when the children of Israel went through tough times in the land of Egypt or in Babylonian captivity.

They were the people of promise, God had chosen them for greater honour yet they went through troublesome moments.
They might have not experienced that honour but a foundation for the nation of Israel was being lay for the generations to come.

Before Egypt Joseph had been chosen for the same honour he went through an experience from within his own family when his own blood brothers dumped him in a pit, sold off into slavery and later in Egypt, where he became a prisoner. But this was God writing the script for the next generation of Israel. He chose the transformation of one man to change the future of the Israelites. Because of this experience Joseph, developed qualities that built his character into the Joseph who did mighty things, a man who saved a whole generation of the Israelite nation.  Joseph became a man of character, a servant leader, a resilient man, a faithful man and a person of Integrity, a forgiving and rational leader, and most of all a God-fearing man.

It can only be the work of the Holy Spirit to make us into people of a godly character like Joseph.
Gal. 5:16-26 mentions the basic Christian character traits that we should learn that represent the character of God. These include the following;

  • God-fearing
  • Patient
  • Gentle
  • Kind
  • Love
  • Goodness
  • Faithfull
  • Self-controlled

All these qualities were in Joseph.

Character can be learnt; we learn the character of someone and it becomes part of us. The bible warns us not to be in company of bad company character because it can be transferred to us.

1 Corinthians 15:33 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition 33 Do not be so deceived and misled! Evil companionships (communion, associations) corrupt and deprave good manners and morals and character.

Thanks be to God that we can learn the character of our heavenly Father by;

Knowing Him
Philippians 3:8-10 New International Version
8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in[a] Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

Loving Him
1 John 4:7-9 New King James Version
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.

Walking with Him
Micah 6:8 New King James Version
8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justly, To love [a]mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?

Imitating Him (imitate Christ)
Ephesians 5:1-7 American Standard Version
5 Be ye therefore imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for [a]us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for an odor of a sweet smell.
3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as becometh saints; 4 nor filthiness, nor foolish talking, or jesting, which are not befitting: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know of a surety, that no fornicator, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no man deceive you with empty words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them;

Philippians 1:11 May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.

PRAYER: LORD I want to be a person of character, transform me from who I am and change me into the person you want me to be, the process may be painful but help me to endure the process because for this I will bring much glory and praise to you, GOD, in Jesus Name, Amen.
