2 Timothy 3 New International Version
3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 4:2 New International Version
2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.
Every Christian needs to depend on the word of God in order to overcome the plagues, disease, trials, persecutions and any such things as we are facing today. The word of God is vital, it helps us as children of God through such times and we live in victory.
Through the Word, Jesus instructed his disciples regarding the end times, he warned us by giving this instruction, 4 Jesus answered, “Be careful that no one misleads you [deceiving you and leading you into error].” Matthew 24:4 Amplified Bible.
Apostle Paul’s also writes in respect of the end times and instructs us that we ought to know the word not just in our heads but it should be a hearts’ conviction of God’s word.
Why do we need the word of God?
It is inspired of God:
Because this word is inspired of God, it is the very breath of God. It is here not just written by someone but through the Holy Spirit himself who worked through human vessels (secondary authors), godly people who were literally carried and inspired to write so that today we have the written scriptures. 2 Peter.1:19-21 NIV.
Therefore, we should receive and act on this word without doubt that it is from God.
Its revelation Power:
Secondly, the word of God reveals everything we need to know about God, about Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. This word also reveals who the devil is. We have no excuse to live in ignorance of the word of God, because in His kindness He gave us the Word. This word also goes ahead to reveal ourselves to ourselves. It is a mirror that shows us who we truly are. When the word of God begins to work in us, no one needs to tell you that you are a sinner. The word of God is powerful Hebrews.4:12 NIV.
Its clear purpose:
The word of God has a clear purpose, spelt out in Paul’s letter to Timothy
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3:14-15 New International Version
There is need for us therefore to know this word and believe it because it is going to lead us to salvation through Christ Jesus.
Its promised benefits:
There are promises and benefits in this word for us especially during such perilous time, it is also profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. This will develop the process of sanctification in us because we have allowed the word of God to do His work in us.
What is our response?
We can have something very good and not benefit from it that much but we ought to benefit much out of the word of God now that we understand why we need it in our lives by responding appropriately to this word.
Hear the word
Hearing the word of God. Romans.10:17 NIV.
We need to hear the word- the word is Christ Himself; when we hear the word, we develop faith in what we are hearing. On the contrary, negative hearing builds negative thoughts which will lead to unbelief. But the word of God will build our faith and good godly thoughts. Therefore, it is important to select what we hear.
Believe the word.
There is mental faith: where someone simply agree with the facts of the bible, this truth is not in that person.
The transforming faith: One which challenges the attitude and thinking, a faith which accepts Christ as Lord. This faith changes my attitude, belief, thinking, lifestyle to align with God because of believing in Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord.
Hide this word in our hearts:
9 How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. 10 I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. 11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:9-11 New International Version
When the word is hidden in our hearts it begins to take effect in our lives and transforms us completely.
Do the word:
We also need to be doers and not just hearers of the word. It is only when we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior that He empowers us to be doers of the Word of God.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22 New International Version
Preach and teach the Word:
We need to preach the word of God; The word of God is like seed, seed has to be sown to be able to germinate and grow. If we do all these, God will honor His word
1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 2 Timothy 4:1-2 New International Version
If there is anything we can do for the Kingdom of God while we are still in this body, it is preaching the word of God.
